These paintings have a nostalgic feel to them; a revisiting of a familiar theme. Although similar in size and shape, the collaged drawings are unique, individual and each sit proudly in their placement.

Having no idea that they would be used in paintings, and many years since I’d used them, I followed an impulse to buy a Spirograph set.

As soon as I began to draw with them, all my frustrations from childhood came to the surface; the disc would slip, I’d stop in the wrong place, or the pen would smudge. I couldn’t make them perfect and would throw them away, seeing no value in the imperfections.

When we give up the notion of perfection and accept imperfections, we learn to see the value in them. A whole new world opens up to us. A sense of ease and relief washes over as we surrender to the idea that we have to be perfect. We are now able to appreciate how interesting and diverse imperfection can be. Our perception shifts quite profoundly from what we cannot do, to what we can do.
